Alkane is the UK's leading mine methane operator with 17 MW of power generation plant at 7 sites. The company's turnover in 2006 was approximately £27 million and it made a profit of £1.12 million. It captured around 20,000 tonnes of methane in the smae year and used it as fuel to generate 59 million kWh of electricity. Alkane has licences to extract methane from abandoned coal mines in all of the UK's major coalfields. A project to verify these emissions reductions for trading in the voluntary carbon markets is under way. |
